We're currently seeking a Financial Controller for our Excavation Department.
Job Summary
The Financial Controller exclusively for the Excavation Department is responsible for overseeing the financial operations, budgeting, cost control, and reporting for excavation projects.
This role ensures that excavation projects are financially sound, compliant, and executed within budget.
The controller will work closely with Land Development Managers, Procurement, and Executive leadership to support strategic decision-making and operational efficiency.
Candidate will work full-time in our office located in South Plainfield, NJ
responsibilities
- Oversee the financial management of excavation projects, including budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
- Track project costs and ensure alignment with approved budgets and estimates.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports specific to the Excavation Division.
- Coordinate with project managers to review job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reports, and billing schedules.
- Assist office manager with accounts payable/receivable and payroll functions related to excavation personnel and subcontractors.
- Work with Equipment manager to analyze equipment utilization, depreciation, and overhead allocation to ensure accurate project cost reporting.
- Ensure compliance with financial policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with procurement to manage vendor contracts, pricing agreements, and material cost tracking.
- Assist with internal and external audits, providing documentation and analysis as required.
- Evaluate financial performance and recommend process improvements to enhance profitability and efficiency.
qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or CMA preferred.
- 3+ years of financial management experience in construction, excavation, or heavy civil industries.
- Strong knowledge of job costing, construction accounting, and project financials.
- Proficient in accounting software (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, Timberline or similar).
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple active projects.
